Food Allergies Candy
The families with children must be educated about food allergies candy safety. All kids (even adults) love candy. However the kids with food allergies may not realize exactly what they can take and what they can’t. For example, your child may know that he or she is allergic to peanuts. They may think that a plain chocolate bar is safe for them to eat. In some cases, it may be. However, in other cases the chocolate may have been packaged or prepared in a plant where peanuts are also used. This can be dangerous because for many people with peanut allergies even the smallest trace can cause a serious reaction.
The first thing you should do is educate your child in great detail. Make sure they are aware of their allergy. Write a list of rules that you expect them to follow. Have them repeat those rules back to you on a regular basis. Kids sometimes forget things they learn which is why repetition is so important in this case. One rule might be to never accept candy from anyone without first checking with an adult who is aware of the child's allergy and can read the label carefully. In some cases, the manufacturer of the candy may need to be called to double check for the presence of the allergic substance in the candy.
Halloween can be a dangerous time for kids with food allergies. This is why it is absolutely crucial that your child wear a medical ID bracelet at all times, but especially at Halloween. The new silicone wristbands are fashionable, comfortable, and attention-getting. They're also cheap which means it's no big deal to replace them. If your child is going trick or treating, go with them. Examine every piece of candy in your child's trick or treat bag to ensure no allergic substances are in them. You may need to do some research and even contact the candy companies if you're not sure. Toss out everything that is unwrapped.
