Food Allergies To Corn
Food allergies due to corn are the most unusual one. Corn does not figure in the top eight listed by FDA as the most allergic foods. The list constitutes eggs, milk, soy, wheat, fish, shellfish, peanuts, and tree nuts. This doesn't mean that corn allergies don't exist or aren't harmful or bothersome. They are just less common. It is important to recognize the symptoms of corn allergy and understand what to do if you are diagnosed with this type of food allergy or feel you have an intolerance or sensitivity to it.
Some corn allergies may produce traditional allergic reactions such as hives, swelling, itching, gastrointestinal discomfort and in severe cases, anaphylaxis. Sometimes, allergies may be confused with sensitivity or intolerance. Actual food allergy occurs when the immune system launches an attack against a substance seen as a threat to the body. The war that is waged between the antibodies produced by the immune system and the foreign substance is what causes the allergic reaction. Because it can be hard to distinguish between allergy, sensitivity and intolerance, you should have your condition evaluated by an allergist.
The most important thing to do if you have an allergy to corn is to avoid it. This is easier said than done because there are so many foods that may contain corn in some form. Corn can be found in flour, chips, soups and stews and much more. If corn is a problem for you it is important to read labels carefully. If you have any questions about the ingredients in a processed food item contact the manufacturer and ask them. When eating out, make sure to inquire whether or not anything you've ordered contains corn or corn oil. While it may be difficult to avoid corn it is not impossible.
If you have been diagnosed with food allergies to corn, there are several things you can do. You may want to wear a medical alert bracelet or necklace that informs others of your allergy. It is also important to understand the symptoms you may experience and how to treat them. In addition to talking to your allergist and physician, it may help to join an online message board for sufferers of food allergies. Talking to others who are dealing with the same problem can be therapeutic and educational.
