Peanut Allergy In Children

Peanut allergy in children is an awfully severe and dangerous problem. Hence it is primal for the parents of these children should be extremely cautious about what their children consume. There are two ways that peanut allergies can be fatal to children. The first is due to the swelling of the airways which is a condition called laryngospasm. The second is called anaphylaxis which can occur immediately or as long as two hours after ingestion of the allergen. While these two conditions are life-threatening a child's life can be saved by immediate medical attention.

The most common treatment for allergic reaction to peanuts is an injection of epinephrine (adrenaline.) Parents who know their children have peanut allergies should always have epinephrine syringes at the ready. There should be a kit on each floor of your home, in your vehicle, and in the nurses office of your child's school. Making others aware of your child's allergy is extremely important. Inform the school about your child's allergy. You should also inform any friends, parents of friends or other people your child spends time with. Anyone your child spends time with should know about the allergy and how to administer treatment. While it is important to call 911 immediately if a reaction is suspected, you may need to give an injection in the meantime while waiting for medical help. Prompt intervention can be a life saver.

If your child is allergic to peanuts, it is absolutely crucial that peanuts and all peanut products be avoided. This can be tricky because peanuts may be found in foods that you would never suspect. Peanuts and traces of peanuts may be found in bakery items such as breads, cakes and cookies. Even other foods like chili or stew may contain peanut products. Read labels carefully and if you have a question about a food item call the manufacturer before allowing your child to eat it. Even a miniscule amount of peanut can be deadly to those with allergies.

For parents who are concerned about the possibility of peanut allergy in children, it is important to seek advice from an allergist who can run the proper tests and evaluate your child for allergies. There are several tests that can be done, including blood testing and skin testing. Once the results come back your allergist will explain the results to you and discuss any action or precautions that must be taken to keep your child healthy and safe.
