Zyrtec And Food Allergies
Zyrtec, commercially known as cetirizine HCI is a drug used to treat various allergies. Even the company tagline is 'Lots of allergies, just one Zyrtec’. The most significant thing about this drug is that it is permitted for very young children. Zyrtec and food allergies is a subject many people want to know about. If you have questions about whether or not Zyrtec can treat your particular food allergy problem, it is best to speak to an allergist who has plenty of experience treating food allergies. The first step is to obtain an accurate diagnosis, as food allergies may sometimes not be allergies at all but rather intolerance or sensitivity.
Food allergies occur when a substance in the food triggers an immune system response. When the body's immune system detects a threat, it produces antibodies which wage war against the offender. This so-called war is what causes the symptoms associated with an allergic reaction. These symptoms may be mild, moderate or severe. They may include itching, rash, hives, wheezing and swelling. A very serious type of reaction is called anaphylaxis and requires immediate medical attention to prevent fatal consequences. If you are susceptible to anaphylaxis from food allergy you will likely be given a kit containing epinephrine syringes to use in the event of a reaction.
For less serious food allergies, drugs like Zyrtec may work to calm symptoms. When seeking a diagnosis of allergy there may be bloodwork done or a skin test administered. If allergies are diagnosed, the first course of action is to avoid the offending food. This can be difficult sometimes because certain food items may contain allergens that you are not aware of. For example, peanut butter may be found in chili. On the subject of peanuts, allergies to them are often so severe that even a fragment of peanut dust can set off a reaction. Read labels carefully and get plenty of information about what you're ordering when dining out.
If you have questions about Zyrtec and food allergies, speak to a medical professional. Your doctor and/or allergist can prescribe this medicine and instruct you on proper use. They will also let you know about any side effects you may experience from this medication. If you do experience side effects, call the prescribing doctor right away but continue to take the medicine unless directed otherwise. Of course, if you experience a serious side effect or reaction call 911 or go to your local emergency room.
